Language is constantly evolving. While one word may never perfectly describe such a diverse and rich culture, using intentional language can make us more inclusive and can help us better embrace diversity. Another point to note is that these terms are and should be self-identifying. If you identify as Latino and meet a definition based on language, culture, or region, you are Latino/Latino, Hispanic, or Chicano/Chicana. Latin America Map Inclusion While using the correct terminology and understanding differences is a start to being more inclusive, the entire idea of Hispanic Heritage Month has recently been called into question.


For one, the term “Hispanic” as used during Hispanic Customer Phone Number List Heritage Month fails to acknowledge those with indigenous or African ancestry. Not only has the terminology been questioned, Hispanic Heritage Month has also been criticized for underrepresenting Black and Indigenous voices. When I say that, I don’t mean to sound like a broken record; Yes, it's important that we learn the terms mentioned in the previous section, but even the term "Hispanic" summarizes a culturally rich and diverse group.

It's hard; after all, how can a few terms accurately describe more than 20 different countries and regions and the people within them? Hispanic Heritage Month has been criticized because it can lead to generalizations of achievement and culture while excluding the diversity of race, culture, language and class within the community from the conversation.
